Hello,
Leroy was unable to find a tiller that
he could borrow, so he rented one from a home store. He asked for a large model.
It did fit in the borrowed van, but the price almost took his breath away. The rental
cost was not so large, but the cost if it were not returned was over $5,000. That
is some tiller. I did see them working in the garden. In the rather large space
it did not look so enormous. It was thankfully easy to handle. They did have to
rent ramps to get it in the van as Leroy declared there was no possibility of
the two of them lifting it. The garden looked well tended in the places that
they had already plowed under. I did not wait to see the entire thing ready for
planting.
I can still see my mother fighting
with her small tiller. It seemed to win the struggle half the time as it
appeared ready to dig a hole all the way to China. Can you imagine their
surprise when the tiller would come up followed by my mother?
The pile of compost that must have
looked large in the pickup looks small when piled by the garden. This garden
could use about six more loads. There is another person who offered to get a
load, but they did not respond when Leroy sent out the email plea. Perhaps he
can make contact with them another way. If rains come in a timely manner,
perhaps this will be the best garden ever.
I put our Cuban oregano pot outside to
get used the climate. A squirrel found it and tipped it over twice. It broke
several branches. I have planted it in the front garden bed with a sprinkling
of hot pepper around it hoping squirrels do not like hot pepper. Hot pepper
will probably grow there. The squirrels have also eliminated four coleus sprigs
that I kept over the winter. The ones in the pot which have not been
transferred are still alive, but I am not sure they will be ignored by that
four legged wonder.
